Politics of Trade Agreements Working Group
WORKING GROUP PURPOSE AND OBJECTIVES: The Politics of Trade Agreements working group is focused on providing the political, economic and social contexts of U.S. trade strategy. In practice, this means analyzing, studying and presenting materials, resources and information about the various strategies of U.S. trade in context of the political, economic and social environment of a particular region that are accurate, comprehensive in nature, come from the ground-up and are framed towards action. The objectives of this group are to provide students with research and campaigning opportunities, while simultaneously contributing to the specific advocacy goals of STJC campaigns.
WORKING GROUP STRUCTURE AND FUNCTION: This WG will be composed of one WG Coordinator and several WG members. This WG will be a primary author of STJC policy-related materials, documents and briefs that will serve as resources for the advocacy campaign(s) which STJC is engaged in at the time.
ROLE DESCRIPTIONS:
1 WG Coordinator, whose immediate role will include:
a. Daily oversight of the group's progress as it relates to the needs of STJC's advocacy campaign(s)
b. Assisting in the compilation and creation of materials and resources
c. Taking an active role in establishing and maintaining meaningful partnerships with domestic and international policy partners
4-5 WG Members, whose immediate roles will include:
a. Study and analysis of the political, economic and social aspects of the region or nation(s) in which the U.S. is pursuing a free trade, trade investment, or other bilateral agreement
b. Research and analysis of how those trade agreements or treaties have affected or stand to affect the socio-economic climate of the given region
c. Production and presentation of materials, documents and briefs that aim to contribute to the political advocacy ends of an STJC campaign

... Studying and analyzing the structure and strategy of U.S. trade negotiations, from TIFAs, to BIT's, to FTAs.
... Researching and working on the issues surrounding any Latin American FTAs that are pending
... Engaging in Latin American civil society and partner dialogue
... Authoring or Co-authoring of documents, briefs, and materials that can be used in the JFA Campaign
