Trade is complex, so much so that it's easy to forget a key, real-world fact: rational argument is necessary but NOT sufficient for changing policy. Only enough people calling for change guarantees it; but making really nifty arguments doesn't. Without the campus base, STJC is just talking heads, not a movement - which is why we need you to step your campus up to the plate.
There are two ways to get your campus involved: you can start a new chapter of STJC, or you can affiliate with an existing group. It's important to remember that because trade affects a whole variety of issues - HIV/AIDS, sweatshops, and potable water, to name only a few - that becoming an STJC affiliate doesn't need to change what you're doing as much as just add a whole new dimension to it.
So you want to get involved? Here's what goes into bringing your campus to the Trade Justice movement!
STJC Chapters
Your chapter will communicate regularly with the National Team. Usually this will be your regional organizer, but it might end up being someone whose work you're interested in.
Communicating with the National Team is really important, but no more than taking the initiative and communicating with other STJC chapters, too!
Every semester, your chapter will set a target number of advocacy actions you'd like to participate that the National Team coordinates, with a minimum of three. Actions aren't necessarily huge, and there's an ever-growing list to pick from. Creativity is crucial, and nobody knows that better than you how to make an event work with your campus culture!
Participating in call-ins, letter writing, and even lobbying on trade-related legislation and other issues is crucial. We'll help, of course! We encourage each chapter to try to develop an active relationship with their local Congressional Representatives and other important decision-makers on trade related matters.
Your chapter's weekly participation in discussions on briefs sent out by the National Team is also vital. This might sound onerous, but it's not! We all know how rewarding good weekly group conversations can be, but how hard they can be to hvae. So, the National Team sends out a short brief every week that's designed to generate discussion in your group. Once you're group's looked at it, you can then join a discussion about it online with every other STJC group. These discussions will inevitably shape the policies and future of STJC.
STJC Affiliates
We understand that affiliates already have a lot of their own priorities set, so while we still make essentially the same requests as of chapters, we scale back all the numbers.
We only ask for one advocacy action per semester, but more are still welcome!
Aim to participate monthly in STJC in-group and on-line discussions rather than weekly.
Engage with your regional organizer about the issues you're already working on to figure out how STJC's work can best serve your needs.
