STJC: Past, Present, and Future
The Student Trade Justice Campaign was born out of the minds of fifteen Oxfam America CHANGE leaders during the fall of 2004. During our first year, we focused on lobbying and organizing against the Dominican Republic Central American Free Trade Agreement (DR-CAFTA). STJC educated hundreds of students from dozens of campuses about the pitfalls and shortcomings of the free trade agreement. Despite its eventual ratification, the CAFTA vote was among the closest trade votes in American legislative history, and the movement for trade justice was strengthened by the alliances that were formed during the debate.
Our second year has focused on expanding our student network and elaborating on how we as an organization can empower youth to achieve the reality of trade justice. Eventually, we realized that STJC needed a direct connection to people who are adversely affected by unjust trade policies in order to strengthen and contextualize our advocacy; consequently, we are now initiating our first partnerships with a variety of Southern groups. The purpose of these partnerships is to bring students in the U.S. together in real, working relationships with Southern organizations who are working either directly or indirectly on trade issues.
These partnerships will enable STJC to advocate for trade justice with greater integrity, effectiveness, and insight than ever before. Not only will partners benefit directly from STJC’s collaborative efforts, but they equip STJC and its members with the knowledge, skills, and legitimacy to become a powerful voice in the worldwide call for trade justice.
